 LEGO® SPIKE™ Essentials: Build, Code & Explore! 🤖

This fun and hands-on LEGO® SPIKE™ Essentials program is designed to help kids learn through play while building and coding exciting robots. Each week, children will create a new model such as a Ferris wheel, cave car, smart bus, pizza delivery robot, cleaning robot, walking robot, and a sumo battle robot.

Kids will explore motors, sensors, and simple coding concepts in a way that is easy to understand and exciting to try. The focus is on having fun, building confidence, and encouraging creativity, not on prior experience or technical knowledge.

Through teamwork and guided challenges, children will:

  • Enjoy building cool LEGO robots

  • Learn basic coding without feeling overwhelmed

  • Improve problem-solving and thinking skills

  • Feel proud and confident about what they create

No prior experience needed — just curiosity and imagination!

Program Overview

This 8-week hands-on LEGO® SPIKE™ Essentials program introduces young learners to robotics, coding, and engineering through exciting real-world themes. Children will build, code, test, and improve robotic models while developing creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork. No prior experience is required.


Week 1 – Introduction to LEGO SPIKE & Connectivity
  • Explore the LEGO® SPIKE™ Essentials kit

  • Learn how the controller connects via Bluetooth

  • Build and program a simple interactive model
    STEM Focus: Basic coding, connectivity, cause & effect


Week 2 – Light Matrix & Visual Coding
  • Learn how the Light Matrix works

  • Program colors, patterns, and brightness

  • Build a Cave Car that reacts to different environments
    STEM Focus: Visual outputs, sequencing, creativity


Week 3 – Motors & Motion
  • Understand motors and speed control

  • Build a Ferris Wheel with adjustable speeds
    STEM Focus: Motors, rotation, speed control


Week 4 – Smart Robotics with Sensors
  • Learn how sensors help robots “see” the world

  • Build a Big Bus that reacts to obstacles
    STEM Focus: Sensors, conditionals, problem-solving


Week 5 – Pizza Delivery Robot

Theme: Automation in daily life

  • Build and code a robot that delivers a “pizza”
    STEM Focus: Motion, distance sensing, automation


Week 6 – Roomba Cleaning Robot

Theme: Robots that help at home

  • Design a robot that avoids obstacles while cleaning
    STEM Focus: Loops, conditionals, environmental sensing


Week 7 – Walking Robot

Theme: Robots that move like humans and animals

  • Build a walking robot using gears
    STEM Focus: Gears, balance, mechanical motion


Week 8 – Sumo Battle Robot (Final Challenge!)

Theme: Competition & engineering design

  • Build and code a Sumo Battle Robot

  • Friendly robot battles and celebration
    STEM Focus: Engineering design, strategy, iteration
