Minecraft : Hours of Code

Introduction

Hour of Code focuses on introducing basic programming skills in a simple, accessible way. The Minecraft Hour of Code takes about 1 hour to complete and will introduce the player to programming logic like Repeat Loops and If Statements.

The player can pick one of three scenarios. In each scenario, there is an objective the player must achieve in order to complete the first level. There are 12 – 14 levels in each scenario, which are more complex the higher the level.

There are 3 scenarios in Minecraft Hour of Code: Minecraft: Hero’s JourneyMinecraft Designer, and Minecraft Adventurer.

In Minecraft: Hero’s Journey, there is an agent in every level. The player can program the agent to help Steve in the levels.

In Minecraft Designer, the player must perform an action on a mob, or have the mob perform an action in order to complete the level.

Minecraft Adventurer is the remaining scenario for Minecraft Hour of Code. In this scenario, the player must perform specific actions that interact with the world around them, such as shearing a sheep, planting crops, or building a house. This scenario, unlike the previous two, has 14 levels.

Micro:Bit

Introduction

Introductory classes are an excellent way to give your child an opportunity to discover Robotics without any long-term commitment! Join us for 2 hours of building, coding, and discovering how robotics can be a fun, lifetime skill!

Micro:bit is a tiny computer designed for beginners in electronics and coding. It can be coded with something simple in seconds – like lighting up its LEDs or displaying a pattern – without prior knowledge of computing. Programming the micro:bit can be done by computer or by the app available for Android and iOS devices. Code is designed using a drag and drop interface in the Blocks editor. It also connects to other devices, sensors, kits and objects to encourage more complex learning. Each element is completely programmable via easy-to-use software on a dedicated website, microbit.org, which can be accessed from a PC, tablet or mobile.

Key features of the micro:bit

  • 25 red LEDs to light up, flash messages, create games and invent digital stories.
  • Two programmable buttons are activated when pressed. Use the micro:bit as a games controller. Pause or skip songs on a playlist.
  • An onboard motion detector or “accelerometer” that can detect movement and tell other devices you’re on the go. Featured actions include shake, tilt and freefall. Turn the micro:bit into a spirit level. Light it up when something moves. Use it for motion-activated games.
  • A built-in compass or “magnetometer” to sense which direction you’re facing, your movement in degrees, and where you are. Includes a magnet, which can recognize certain types of metals.
  • Bluetooth Smart Technology that connects to the internet and interacts with the world around you. Connect the micro:bit to other micro:bits, devices, kits, phones, tablets, cameras and everyday objects. Share creations or join forces to create multi-micro:bit masterpieces. Take a selfie, pause a DVD, or control your playlist.
  • Five Input and Output (I/O) rings to connect the micro:bit to devices or sensors using crocodile clips or 4mm banana plugs. Use the micro:bit to send commands to and from the rings to power devices like robots and motors.

3Doodlers 3D Printing

Introduction

A 3D pen is a pen that extrudes heated or warm plastic from the pen’s nozzle. There is no need for software, no files to transfer, and no difficult tech to master. In the words of a teacher we work with, “whatever you imagine, you can draw. It goes from your brain, to your hand, right there.”

With a 3D pen, you can draw a raised graphic on a piece of paper or any flat surface. But what makes a 3D pen truly unique is its ability to “draw” in mid-air, allowing you to instantly form 3D structures right in front of you, which you can pick up and hold in your hand.

Makerspace Paper Circuit Jr.

Introduction

Kids will create electronic circuits using paper, foil and batteries. They will learn about currents, resistance and voltage.

Creating paper circuits is a great way to teach the basics of electricity and how circuits function. In addition to being educational, they can be a fun makerspace project that helps bring artwork and papercraft to life. By adding sensors, buzzers and motors to your circuit, you can also add another dimension of interactivity. These simple projects are great for all ages and all makerspaces.

Using copper tape and surface-mount LEDs allows you to make a fully functional circuit on a flat surface, like a piece of paper. You can make light-up greeting cards, make origami animals come to life, or make a three-dimensional pop-up paper sculpture with working lights.
